Survey: Transportation Demand Modeling and Planning Issues

  • Present population of metropolitan area
  • Does MPO conduct travel demand modeling in-house or use another organization (e.g. state DOT, consultant)?
  • What transportation demand modeling software does MPO (or the organization that conducts travel demand modeling for MPO) presently use for transportation planning purposes (e.g., TRANSCAD, EMME/2, TRANPLAN, VISUM, CUBE)?
  • How long has MPO (or the organization that conducts travel demand modeling for MPO) been using this software?
  • What are most useful improvements to travel demand software using at present?
  • Is MPO (or the organization that conducts travel demand modeling for MPO) planning to change to different software over the next two years? If “yes,” which software>
  • What is your opinion about the development of TRANSIMS at this stage?
  • Does MPO plan to start using/testing TRANSIMS components over the next two years?
  • Typically, what is your best estimate of the percentage of the projects/original concepts of projects (e.g. capital projects, operational projects, growth strategies) included in metropolitan area’s TIP and LRTP that originate from MPO staff?
  • Has MPO asked for a travel modeling peer review (through the TMIP program) in the past or does it plan to do so within the next two years?
  • The FHWA is considering having quality assurance in travel demand modeling become part of the certification process of transportation planning in transportation management areas. What is your opinion on this issue?
  • How important is it for improved techniques to be developed (by software vendors and/or funded research) for each of the following: integration of land use and transportation models; activity based modeling; peak spreading;
  • integration among micro-simulation, travel demand modeling, and transportation planning; modal split
  • required accuracy of input data for the demand modeling process; freight modeling; trip chaining; interaction among congestion on a transportation network, number of trips generated (activities taking place), and trip distribution (where the activities take place); speed balancing; parking cost modeling; and carpool modeling.
