Bike Sharing Programs
This survey was published in Volume 23, Number 2 of the Urban Transportation Monitor on March 9, 2009
Survey consists of responses from five agencies that have either implemented or are planning a bike sharing program. Topics/questions regarding existing bike sharing programs include:
- What is the name of your bike sharing program?
- In which city and district of the city is your bike sharing program located?
- When did your bike sharing program start? (please provide month and year)
- How many bikes are in your bike sharing program?
- How many bike sharing locations (stations) are there in your program?
- Within how many square miles are your bike stations located?
- What factors were considered in locating bike stations?
- What is provided at your bike sharing stations?
- Briefly describe how a bike can be reserved, rented, and how payments are made.
- What is the cost to rent a bike?
- What is the fee imposed if a bike is not returned?
- How many bike rentals take place on a typical weekday and on a typical weekend day?
- Please provide your best estimate of the purposes for which bicycles are rented. For example: sightseeing: 50%; commuting: 30%; other: 30%.
- Approximately what percentage of the bikes rented needs to be redistributed among your bike stations?

- How many full time personnel are used to run the program (administration, operations and maintenance)?
- What is the capital cost of the implementation of your bike sharing program?
