Traffic Engineering Aspects of Transit-Oriented Development
This survey was published in Volume 23, Number 3 of the Urban Transportation Monitor on April 6, 2009
Survey consists of responses from five city traffic engineers at cities where transit-oriented development has taken place. Topics/questions include:
- What level of service (LOS) do you try and maintain for autos in transit-oriented development (TOD)?
- Do you have a policy to give priority to pedestrians, bicycles, and transit on some or all of the roads in your TOD areas?
- What level of service (LOS) do you try and maintain for pedestrians, bicycles, and transit on some or all of the roads in your TOD areas?
- Do you restrict the amount of off-street parking provided by new developments in TOD areas?
- What are your off-street parking policy and rates for new development in your TOD areas?
- Is it the ability to accommodate traffic (and the results of traffic impact studies) that places a limit on the intensity of developments in your TOD areas? Please provide reasons for your answer.
- Do you limit exclusive turn lanes in your TOD areas? Please provide reasons for your answer.
- What types of on-street parking (parallel, front-in and/or back-in angle parking) are provided in your TOD areas?
- What is your opinion on the provision of angled parking in TOD areas?
- What do you consider as the best traffic-related aspects of your TOD developments?
- What do you consider as the worst traffic-related aspects of your TOD developments?
- What advice (related to traffic aspects in TOD areas) would you provide to those cities planning TOD areas?
